Month 13 - How to support development of the child in the 13th month?

You can support development of the 13-month-old child by:

  • enabling it to discover the world on its own;
  • ensuring its safety when it moves around the house (hide all items that it may swallow, secure power sockets and furniture edges);
  • establishing limits and adhering to them - firmly explain to your child that not all items can be used as toys (especially those that may cause harm to it);
  • encouraging it to speak, asking it questions and waiting for its answer, avoiding correcting it when it says something in its own language (you should confirm its statement and repeat, using a correct form, e.g., “yes, this is a dog”);
  • reading it books, changing intonation and voices, and showing it pictures;
  • playing with your child games engaging its hands and fingers;
  • allowing it to eat itself with a spoon; giving it toys that resemble things used in a daily life (e.g., a toy telephone, pots, etc.);
  • showing your child respect, understanding and acceptance (especially, when it shows negative emotions or rebels);
  • encouraging the child to being looked after by other people.
