Tummy time is one of the most important activities for your baby’s development — and it can start from the very beginning. Though some babies resist it at first, regular tummy time helps them build muscles and coordination needed for future milestones.

Why Tummy Time Is Essential

When your baby spends time on their stomach while awake and supervised, they strengthen key muscle groups and improve motor control. Tummy time helps:

  • Build neck, shoulder, arm, and back strength
  • Promote head control and posture
  • Prevent flat spots on the back of the head (positional plagiocephaly)
  • Lay the groundwork for rolling, crawling, and sitting

Even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference!

Getting Started: When and How

You can begin tummy time as early as the first days at home, once your baby is alert and awake. Start small — 1–2 minutes, a few times a day — and build up gradually.

Here are some ideas:

  • Chest-to-chest: Lie on your back and place baby on your chest — they’ll lift their head to look at your face.
  • Towel support: Roll a small towel under the chest to help lift and support.
  • Use mirrors or toys: Babies love faces, including their own!
  • Sing and talk: Your voice will encourage baby to lift and look.

What If Baby Hates Tummy Time?

Some babies fuss during tummy time — that’s okay! Keep sessions short and interactive. Try placing baby across your lap, or on your forearm. The goal is consistency, not perfection.

Also remember: tummy time doesn’t have to be on the floor. Babywearing in an upright carrier, laying on your chest, or even gentle bouncing on a yoga ball can support similar muscle engagement.

With practice, your baby will grow stronger and more confident every day.
