Major Organ Systems Become Functional
Week 10 marks a significant milestone as your baby's major organ systems begin to function together as an integrated whole. The heart, liver, kidneys, brain, and digestive system are all working, though they'll continue to mature throughout pregnancy⁴.
Your baby's heart is now pumping blood efficiently throughout their tiny body. The liver begins producing bile, and the kidneys are filtering waste from the blood and producing urine. The brain is coordinating these functions through increasingly sophisticated neural networks.
Breathing Movements Begin
Although your baby won't breathe air for many months, they begin making breathing-like movements this week. These movements help develop the diaphragm and chest muscles that will be essential for breathing after birth. The lung buds continue to branch and grow, creating the structure needed for gas exchange⁵.
These practice breathing movements also contribute to normal amniotic fluid circulation, which is important for your baby's overall development and lung maturation.
Sexual Differentiation Begins
Week 10 marks the beginning of sexual differentiation. While the chromosomal sex was determined at conception, external genitalia begin developing this week. However, male and female genitalia look very similar at this stage, and it won't be possible to determine sex visually for several more weeks.
The process is guided by hormones, particularly testosterone in male babies. The absence or presence of certain hormones determines whether the initially identical structures develop into male or female genitalia.
Facial Development Continues
Your baby's face continues to develop rapidly. The eyes, which started on the sides of the head, are moving closer together. The ears are developing and moving toward their final position on the sides of the head. The mouth and lips are becoming more defined, and the nose is taking on a more recognizable shape⁶.
