A New Beginning

The moment you hold your baby for the first time, your world changes forever. This tiny person has just arrived, and the bond begins. During this first week of life, your newborn is adjusting to life outside the womb – a world of light, sound, touch, and movement. Everything is new, and your presence is their greatest comfort.

What’s Happening with Your Baby?

In week one, most babies sleep around 16 to 18 hours a day in short stretches. Their eyes can only focus at a short distance – perfect for seeing your face during feeding or cuddles. They rely on reflexes like sucking and grasping. Their cries are their first way of communicating needs: hunger, discomfort, or the need for closeness.

Your baby's body is adjusting to life outside the womb. Their digestive system is just beginning to work. You might notice frequent feedings, burping, and plenty of diaper changes – these are all good signs that your baby's body is learning and growing. Their skin may peel or show baby acne, and their head might still be misshapen from birth – all perfectly normal.

Feeding and Sleeping

This week is about discovering a rhythm together. Whether you are breastfeeding, formula-feeding, or both, feeding your baby frequently (every 2–3 hours) helps establish their nutritional needs. Don’t stress about schedules yet – responsiveness is key. Sleep may come in irregular patterns, and night confusion (mixing up night and day) is common.

Try to sleep when your baby sleeps. Even short naps can help. Keep nighttime interactions calm and quiet to encourage longer sleep stretches. During the day, try gentle light and activity to help establish a difference.

Bonding and Comfort

Skin-to-skin contact helps regulate your baby’s temperature, heart rate, and stress. Gentle cuddling, soft singing, and talking to your baby are not just soothing – they are laying the foundation for emotional development. Your baby already recognizes your voice and scent and feels safest in your arms.

Eye contact during feeds and diaper changes helps your baby begin to recognize your face. Even if they can’t smile yet, their brain is learning rapidly. These early moments of closeness help shape secure attachment.

What You Might Be Feeling

You are healing – physically and emotionally. Exhaustion, hormone swings, and overwhelming love can hit all at once. It's completely normal to feel joy, fear, doubt, and everything in between. If you're struggling, reach out for support. You don't have to do this alone.

Your partner may also feel unsure or helpless – encourage them to participate in feeding, cuddling, and skin-to-skin bonding. This is a shared journey.

Checklist: What to Expect This Week

  • 6 to 10 wet diapers per day
  • Frequent feedings (every 2–3 hours)
  • Sleepy, irregular sleep patterns
  • First pediatric check-up
  • Umbilical cord stump care

Final Thought

The first week is full of tiny wins – your baby’s first feeding, their first quiet nap, your first successful diaper change. Celebrate these. You're learning together. The nights may feel endless, but this special chapter is the beginning of a powerful journey. You’re not just surviving – you’re becoming a parent, and you’re doing an amazing job.
