You've likely heard of morning sickness and tender breasts—but did you realize pregnancy also comes with some surprisingly unexpected symptoms? If you're in early pregnancy your body is undergoing dramatic changes, and it's totally normal to feel things you weren't anticipating.
Here are some unexpected early pregnancy symptoms that may surprise you (but don't panic—most are completely normal!).
Metallic Taste in Your Mouth
Do you ever get that feeling like you've been sucking on pennies? Some expectant people get a strange metallic taste or sourness in the mouth even when they aren't having food. This is known as dysgeusia, and it results from pregnancy hormones such as estrogen.
What might work? Chewing sugarless gum, drinking lemon water, or having something sour like citrus fruits.
Excess Saliva (Yes, Really!)
Are you salivating excessively? Excess saliva, also known as ptyalism, may occur during early pregnancy. It tends to appear along with nausea. You may find yourself needing to spit more, or swallowing lots.
This ought to get better in the second trimester. In the meantime, brushing frequently and sucking on peppermint candies might help.
Super Smell Powers
Suddenly loathe the smell of your spouse's cologne or last night's dinner? Many pregnant women develop a super sense of smell during early pregnancy. This is caused by hormone levels increasing and can cause nausea or food cravings.
Tip: Open a window while cooking and steer clear of strong-smelling products such as perfumes or cleaning sprays.
Weird Dreams or Vivid Nightmares
Pregnancy hormones influence your sleep patterns—and that includes your dreams. Most women experience bizarre, vivid, or emotional dreams, particularly in the first trimester. Your brain is busy processing all the changes, even when you're sleeping.
Try establishing a soothing bedtime routine and steer clear of screens before bedtime for improved sleep.
Feeling Like You Have a Cold
Runny nose, sneezing, or stuffy nose? This may not be allergies—it may be pregnancy rhinitis. Your body is producing more blood and fluids, which can cause tissues in your nose to swell.
Use a humidifier, drink plenty of fluids, and discuss with your doctor before using any nasal sprays.
Constipation and Gas (Oh No!)
Due to the hormone progesterone, your digestive system slows down during pregnancy. More bloating, more gas, and yes—constipation. Common, but annoying.
Fiber foods, plenty of water, and casual walking can help things along.
Mood Swings and Crying at Commercials
You're okay one minute, and the next—tears over a puppy video. Ring a bell? Hormones, stress, and lack of sleep can all lead to mood swings in early pregnancy. You may be more emotional than normal, and that's okay.
Be kind to yourself. Rest when you can, and speak with someone you trust if you need additional support.
Strange Food Cravings… or Aversions
Craving pickles and peanut butter? Or suddenly can’t stand your favorite coffee? Hormonal changes can affect your taste and smell, leading to cravings or strong dislikes for certain foods.
Listen to your body—but try to keep your meals balanced when possible.
Mild Cramping or Twinges
It can be frightening to feel a bit crampy, but it's usually fine. As your uterus expands and stretches, you may experience mild cramps or small sharp twinges. Provided there's no heavy bleeding, this is typically not a cause for concern.
However, if you're not sure, contact your healthcare provider for reassurance.
Final Thoughts
Each pregnancy is unique, and some early symptoms may completely catch you off guard. From a super nose to weird dreams, your body is doing incredible things to nourish your growing baby—even if it sometimes feels a little strange.
Just keep in mind: You're not alone, and these symptoms are usually a sign that everything is going just as it should. You've got this, Mama!
