Has your baby suddenly started feeding more often, waking more at night, or becoming extra fussy? You might be witnessing their first big growth spurt. These intense periods of development are short-lived — but they can definitely shake up your routine.

What Is a Growth Spurt?

A growth spurt is a rapid phase of physical and neurological development. Babies often grow visibly taller, heavier, or gain new skills in just a matter of days. It’s like your baby hit the “fast-forward” button!

Growth spurts typically occur around:

  • 1 week
  • 3 weeks
  • 6 weeks
  • 3 months
  • 6 months

Around Week 7, many babies experience a surge in growth and hunger.

Signs of a Growth Spurt

  • Increased feeding: Cluster feeding or wanting to nurse/feed every hour.
  • Restless sleep: More frequent wake-ups or shorter naps.
  • Clinginess: Baby wants more cuddles and reassurance.
  • Fussiness: A normally calm baby might seem harder to soothe.

This is your baby’s way of saying: “I need more fuel to grow!”

How to Support Your Baby

  • Feed on demand — don’t worry about the clock.
  • Trust your instincts — it’s normal if your baby needs extra contact or comfort.
  • Stay hydrated and nourished, especially if breastfeeding.
  • Ask for help when needed — you don’t have to do it all.

Growth spurts typically last 2–3 days, though some can stretch to a week. Once it passes, you may notice new milestones — better head control, longer limbs, or new sounds.

Your baby’s body and brain are growing in beautiful, complex ways. You’re doing an amazing job helping them thrive.
