Rapid Size Increase

Week 16 marks a period of particularly rapid growth for your baby. Measuring approximately 11.6 cm (4.6 inches) from crown to rump and weighing about 100 grams, your baby has nearly doubled in weight since week 13. This rapid growth necessitates significant changes in your body to accommodate your expanding babyÂą.

Uterine Expansion

Your uterus is now approximately the size of a large orange and is beginning to rise above your pelvic bone. This is often when your pregnancy bump becomes noticeable to others, especially if this isn't your first pregnancy. The uterine muscle fibers are stretching and thickening to accommodate continued growth.

First Movements (Quickening)

Week 16 is when many women, especially those who have been pregnant before, first feel their baby's movements. These initial movements, called "quickening," might feel like bubbles, flutters, or gentle taps. First-time mothers might not feel movements until 18-20 weeks, which is completely normal.

These movements indicate that your baby's nervous system is maturing and that muscles are becoming stronger. The movements also provide important stimulation for bone and joint development.

Circulatory System Maturation

Your baby's circulatory system is becoming more sophisticated. The heart is pumping about 25 quarts of blood per day, and blood vessels are developing throughout the body. Your baby's heart rate is typically between 110-160 beats per minute – much faster than an adult's resting heart rate.

Digestive System Progress

The digestive system continues to mature as your baby regularly swallows amniotic fluid. The intestines are now fully contained within the abdominal cavity, and digestive juices are being produced. This practice swallowing helps develop the muscles needed for feeding after birth.

Your Physical Changes

As your baby grows, you may experience:

  • Round ligament pain as supporting ligaments stretch
  • Slight increase in appetite
  • Possible nasal congestion due to increased blood volume
  • Skin changes, including the linea nigra (dark line down the abdomen)
  • Breast growth and darkening of the areolas

  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika

  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

  2. Add carrot, celery, and garlic, cook for 5 minutes
  3. Add lentils, broth, tomatoes, and spices
  4. Bring to boil, then simmer for 20-25 minutes until lentils are tender
  5. Season with salt and pepper
  6. Garnish with fresh parsley
  7. Excellent source of protein, iron, and folate for rapid growth

Emotional Changes

The second trimester often brings emotional stability as hormone levels become more consistent. Many women feel more confident about their pregnancy and begin to feel more connected to their baby, especially once movements are felt.

Preparing for Anatomy Scan

Many healthcare providers schedule the detailed anatomy ultrasound (often called the "20-week scan") between weeks 18-22. This comprehensive exam evaluates your baby's growth and development, checks for structural abnormalities, and often reveals the baby's sex if desired.

Exercise and Activity

With energy levels higher, week 16 is often a great time to establish or maintain an exercise routine. Gentle activities like walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, and modified strength training can help maintain fitness and prepare your body for the demands of later pregnancy and labor.
